I feel the need to spread the word about www.Squidoo.com. Squidoo is a free site where anyone can setup a webpage about anything, and I mean anything. Not only is the site free, but you can get a share of the advertising revenue if you wish (or you can have your cut sent to your favorite charity.) Use Squidoo for shameless advertising: it's all good. Wanna' setup a page with adult content? That's fine too, as long as you give your page the appropriate rating.

Squidoo is highly intuitive. You can setup your page -- they call it a lens -- in a matter of minutes. You can also quickly and easily add all types of content, like YouTube videos, RSS feeds, link lists, Amazon.com recommendations and much more. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to use the Squidoo system.

I like Squidoo a lot. Not only can you setup links to your sites, which is good for search engine optimization, but your Squidoo lens itself can be a great source of targeted traffic. I've seen some Squidoo lenses ranking very well in Yahoo! for some fairly competitive keywords.

If you run a blog, then you know how annoying comment spam can be: desperate web folk who think that they are smarter than the rest of us posting ridiculously spammy comments with a link to their website or to a potentially lucrative affiliate program operator. Thankfully, all the popular blog management systems now feature tools that you can use to eliminate or otherwise control comment spam, and Blogger now adds the "NO FOLLOW" attribute to links added via comments to a Blogger blog, so that search engines ignore the link.

What's worse than comment spam? Splogs ("spam blogs.") Splogs are blogs that are setup for the sole purpose of feeding affiliate links to affiliate operator sites. Blog entries @ splogs often make no sense at all, as many splog operators will fill each post with random sets of keywords and keyphrases in an effort to maximize the splog's search engine rankings.

3. A good faith effort by 888 Casino to adhere to these policies now and in the future.

Citibank has introduced a new credit card advertising program at Commission Junction (cj.com.) Actually, they must have revamped their existing offers, since they've been with Commission Junction for some years now.

Citibank is offering between $30-$65 per approved credit card application. Bottom line: anything above the $60 mark is very competitive, so I think that lots of publishers will be enthusiastic about promoting the Citi Professional card, which delivers $65 per approved application.

The competition among Mortgage programs is heating up as well, especially in the area of mortgage refinance leads. For mortgage refinance leads, here's what some cj.com advertisers are currently offering:

LendingTree.com: $55 per lead.
LowCostLending.com: $42 per lead.
GetSmart.com: $45 per lead.

Affiliate Program Report Card: The SunSpotWeb.com Credit Card Affiliate Program

Last year, I registered a bunch of .CC, credit card related domain names as an experiment: I wanted to see if I could turn a collection of .CC domain names with highly focused keywords/keyphrase second level domains (SLD) into money making websites. My thinking was: since the search engines don't arbitrarily penalize county code top level domain names, why not register credit card related .CC names--since most of the ultra-premium keywords/keyphrases were still available--and market the .CC as .CreditCard. Dot-CC names cost me about $17 per name at www.GoDaddy.com; that's almost double what I pay for .COM names at GoDaddy, but for the perfect keywords and keyphrases, it was certainly worth it.

My First Payment from The Amazon.com Affiliate (Associates) Program

I was reviewing my latest bank statement today and found an automatic payment to my account for $11 and a few cents. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the payment was from the Amazon.com Associates Program--which is Amazon's free affiliate program--even though the payment was relatively small (relative to the payments I get from the myriad other affiliate programs I participate in.)

This payment was exciting for me because it is the first cash I've ever earned from Amazon.com, and I've been with the program for some years now!

Why did it take so long for me to make this small amount of money with the Amazon affiliate program? Well, it's primarily because the program is nothing but pay-per-sale, which means I only get paid a commission when Amazon.com ships an item to a customer who I referred to the Amazon.com online catalog of goods. For obvious reasons, making money with any pay-per-sale affiliate program is much harder than making money with a pay-per-click or pay-pay-lead program.

But that's not to say that you can't make good money with Amazon.com. I know people who are making thousands of dollars per month with Amazon.com's associates program, and they are making that kind of money by putting up highly focused websites, and getting traffic--that is, paying for traffic via programs like Yahoo! Search Marketing (List your site with Yahoo! Sponsored Search and your business could be at the top of search results on Yahoo!, MSN or Alta Vista.), and getting traffic via organic search engine rankings--that is highly targeted to those websites. And these days, it's much easier to make money with Amazon than is was years ago when I first signed up, because Amazon.com has transformed itself from being the Internet's most popular online bookstore to the online megastore that it is today, selling everything from consumer electronics, to furniture, to jewelry, pet supplies, DVD's--and the list goes on.

Let's pretend for a minute that you are an ambitious webmaster with lots of great ideas for a website or websites that could do very well.

OK, so you work hard to create a quality website with useful or interesting content. You pay for some traffic--just to get things going--then the organic search engine traffic starts rolling in, and eventually you start getting lots of return visitors--proof that you providing content that others find interesting.

Then you reach a point where you have to start thinking about generating some revenue from your website(s). After all, you've invested lots of your valuable time and money to create and maintain your site(s), and it doesn't make sense to go broke as a webmaster when there are numerous affiliate programs out there that can help with paying the bills. Server space costs money. Bandwidth costs money. Advertising costs money.

So you do your research and you find that webmasters are doing well with the contextual advertising programs like AdSense. You signup for AdSense, and things are going great! You start earning enough through AdSense that you even start thinking about quitting your day job. You tell all your webmaster friends about how well you are doing with AdSense, praising the highly targeted ads that are provided by the AdSense system: making money, no spammy ads and consistent payouts from The AdSense Team. Things are great.

It means long hours of removing the AdSense code from all your websites. It means countless hours of searching for a good alternative. A colossal waste of time.

Then Yahoo!'s Publisher Network (YPN) Beta program debuts and you decide to give them a try. You are a bit nervous because you got booted from AdSense for no reason, so you call--that's right call, because they have a toll free support hotline!--to see what they have to say about so called "invalid clicks." They tell you that their system detects "invalid clicks" and automatically nullifies them, so even though you won't get paid for them, you also don't have to worry about your YPN account getting disabled for "invalid clicks."

Hallelujah.

Why do I love The Yahoo! Publisher Network Beta Program? Let me count the ways:

A toll free phone number you can call 24 hours a day to get help, information, advice, recommendations--whatever. Email support is available as well, making the YPN support system second to none in the affiliate program world.
If you accidentally click your own ad, you won't get banned from the program. If a competitor clicks your ads in an effort to get you banned, it won't work: you won't get banned. The YPN system automatically detects invalid clicks, and doesn't pay you for them. Such common sense! Countless webmasters have been banned from that other popular contextual advertising program for mysterious "invalid clicks."
Many webmasters have been reporting very strong earnings with YPN.
I've read about certain webmasters having their YPN Publisher account suspended because of too much international traffic. But this is not a total (Google-style) ban. The folks @ YPN are going to let these webmasters back into the publisher program when YPN goes international, which should happen later this year.
Ad targettting, ad blocking, URL tracking, YPN ads for RSS feeds--the list goes on.

I'm looking forward to new features that are coming, like the ability to add a YPN web search box and direct deposit.

So, in conclusion: 3 cheers for YPN!

If you are a webmaster with a quality website(s) are you aren't on board with the YPN program yet, apply as soon as you can. You won't regret it.

Microsoft may have a competing program out some time this year. They've got their work cut out for them: it will be tough to outdo both AdSense and YPN, but not impossible. Time will tell.
